Currently we accommodate over 55 children mostly between the ages of 4 and 12 at a site in Pasua. We provide our residents with matron supervision, regular nutritious meals, and clothing, school needs that include uniforms, books, materials and fees. Currently we are cultivating 40 acres of land in a joint venture with the Majengo Preschool where we grow maize, rice, bananas, beans, tomatoes, potatoes and carrots. Our farm is of major importance to us for feeding the children at both facilities.
We are firmly committed to education and have recently completed a classroom and hired a managing teacher for the orphanage to fulfill this goal. Our younger children are either instructed on the grounds six days a week or attend a preschool in Majengo. Our older children attend local private and public schools where we are active in overseeing the education they receive and in assisting them with individual studies. Many of our children score in the top of their class on final exams.
We currently have the direct medical supervision of a retired physician from the United States. We do regular medical clinics at the orphanage and utilize the services of local clinics and hospitals when more intensive procedures like x‐rays or blood work are needed. All of our children receive intake evaluations including blood work testing for problems such as HIV. We are established with a local dentist and our children receive this service as needed. We have just completed a new septic system and practice hand washing and basic hygiene.
The primary purpose of the Kilimanjaro Children's Fund is to provide financial support and assistance to the children in the Kilimanjaro region who are at risk because they are orphans, homeless, sick or living in extreme poverty. This activity will involve grant assistance for projects designed to deal with specific issues and sites to include orphanages, homeless aide agencies, school placement and assistance work, aide to needy schools and preschools, feeding projects, medical care needs and other worthy areas dealing with children. Grants will be awarded on an individual basis after insuring that financial accountability and oversight are in place. Our secondary goal is to educate the American public to the cultural, social, educational, medical and economic needs of the children of the Kilimanjaro region in Tanzania.
Through the kindness and compassion of people like you, we hope to continue to provide a safe home for orphaned children to live and grow.
